ChatGPT vs Claude: Which AI Assistant Should You Use?
Both are $20/mo, both are excellent. The differences are real and matter depending on what you use AI for. An honest comparison from someone who uses both.
ChatGPT and Claude are the two dominant general-purpose AI assistants in 2026. They're priced identically ($20/month for the paid tier), and on many tasks, they perform similarly enough that the choice feels arbitrary. But there are genuine differences that matter for certain use cases.
Where Claude wins
- Long documents — Claude's context window (200k tokens) is larger than ChatGPT's standard offering. If you routinely paste entire PDFs, research papers, or long codebases, Claude handles this more reliably.
- Writing quality — Claude tends to produce more nuanced, less "AI-sounding" prose. For professional writing, emails, and documents where tone matters, Claude is often the better choice.
- Following complex instructions — Claude tends to be more precise about following detailed, multi-part instructions without drifting. It's less likely to ignore parts of a long prompt.
- Honesty about uncertainty — Claude is more likely to say it doesn't know something rather than confidently hallucinate an answer. This matters for research and fact-dependent work.
Where ChatGPT wins
- Image generation (DALL-E) — ChatGPT Plus includes DALL-E access built in. Claude doesn't generate images.
- Web search — ChatGPT's web search is more polished and used more seamlessly. Claude has web access but it's less integrated into the experience.
- Speed on quick tasks — For short, fast queries, ChatGPT's response speed is marginally faster in most benchmarks.
Where they're roughly equal
- Math and reasoning — Both have improved dramatically. Neither is a replacement for Wolfram Alpha on complex symbolic math.
- Summarisation — Both are excellent. Claude wins on very long inputs due to context window.
The honest answer
Most people who use one would be well-served by the other. If you write a lot and work with long documents, try Claude first. If you want integrations and image generation, ChatGPT. If you're unsure, both have free tiers — use both for a week and see which fits your workflow.
The free tier situation
- Claude.ai (free) — Access to Claude with a daily message limit. Quality is the same as Pro — just rate-limited.
- ChatGPT (free) — Access to GPT-4o mini with occasional access to GPT-4o. More restricted than Claude's free tier in practice.
- Perplexity (free) — If research and web-cited answers are your primary use, Perplexity's free tier is worth trying alongside either.
