10 tools scored · 7 dimensions
Project management tools organise tasks, track progress, and keep teams aligned — everything from a simple to-do list to a full workflow with dependencies, time tracking, and reporting.
Notion, Linear, and ClickUp solve different problems. Linear is purpose-built for software engineering teams — it is fast, opinionated, and integrates natively with GitHub. Notion is the most flexible but requires setup effort; it is a workspace, not a project manager by default. ClickUp packs in the most features but can overwhelm small teams. The scores below reflect task management depth, UI speed, team collaboration, and integration quality.
What are you looking for?
I run a software engineering or product team
Linear is the clear choice for dev teams: GitHub/GitLab sync, sprint planning, and a UI that does not slow you down. Shortcut (Clubhouse) is a close second.

I want an all-in-one workspace (docs + tasks + database)
Notion is the most flexible workspace tool available. Use it for wikis, project databases, meeting notes, and lightweight task management in the same tool. Coda is a strong alternative.

I want the most powerful task management with the lowest cost
ClickUp has the deepest feature set at the most aggressive pricing — including a generous free plan. Asana and Monday.com are strong but more expensive at scale.

Notion if your team also needs a wiki and documentation hub — it handles both in one tool. ClickUp if you need robust task management with time tracking, recurring tasks, and workload views. Notion's task management is functional but not deep; ClickUp's wiki is mediocre. Many teams use both.
Speed and simplicity. Linear loads instantly, keyboard shortcuts work everywhere, and the GitHub integration syncs branch and PR status directly to issues without manual updates. Jira is more powerful for enterprise compliance and complex workflow rules, but its age shows in the UI.
For small teams doing simple project tracking — yes. Notion databases with board, timeline, and calendar views cover most lightweight project management needs. For anything involving sprint planning, velocity tracking, time estimates, or complex dependencies, you will want a dedicated tool.
They are very similar. Asana has a slightly more polished UX and better timeline view. Monday.com has a more flexible column structure and a stronger spreadsheet-like data view. Pricing is comparable. Both target mid-market teams rather than very small or very large organisations.
Yes — ClickUp's free tier is genuinely useful, with unlimited tasks, unlimited members, and 100MB storage. The paid tiers unlock time tracking, advanced reporting, custom fields, and priority support. Most small teams can run on the free plan for months before hitting limits.
How these scores are calculated
Project management scores are based on published feature sets, official pricing pages, third-party reviews from G2 and Capterra, community benchmark comparisons, and independent testing of task creation speed, keyboard shortcut depth, and GitHub/GitLab integration quality as of 2026.
