A hosted search engine indexes your data and serves fast, typo-tolerant search results to your app or website — without you running and tuning a search cluster yourself.
Algolia set the standard for instant, typo-tolerant hosted search, but its premium pricing opened the door for open-source alternatives — Typesense and Meilisearch — that target the same developer experience and speed at a fraction of the cost, either self-hosted for free or via their own cloud offerings. Elasticsearch and its AWS-backed fork OpenSearch sit at the other end: far more powerful and flexible for complex analytics use cases, but with a meaningfully steeper learning curve and real operational overhead. Vespa exists for teams with genuinely large-scale ranking and ML requirements that the others aren't built for.

Algolia remains the most polished option out of the box, with sub-50ms responses and excellent typo tolerance with little configuration. Typesense and Meilisearch get you close at a much lower price if budget is tight.

Most databases' built-in full-text search (including Postgres') is adequate for basic substring matching but weak on typo tolerance, relevance ranking, and faceted filtering — the things that make search actually feel good to use. A dedicated search engine is purpose-built for ranking quality and speed at the volumes and query patterns real users produce.
If budget allows, Algolia's out-of-the-box relevance tuning and reliability at scale remain hard to match without real engineering investment. If you're cost-sensitive or want full control, Typesense and Meilisearch were both built explicitly to close that gap — many teams find the experience close enough to not justify Algolia's price for typical use cases.
OpenSearch is the Apache-2.0-licensed fork of Elasticsearch, created by AWS and the community after Elastic changed its licensing terms. They started fully API-compatible and have since diverged somewhat in features, but for most teams the choice comes down to whether you want AWS-backed open governance (OpenSearch) or Elastic's own roadmap and managed offerings (Elasticsearch).
Meilisearch and Typesense are both designed to be easy to self-host — a single binary with sensible defaults. Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, and Vespa are considerably more operationally demanding: cluster sizing, shard management, and ongoing tuning are real, ongoing work, not a one-time setup task.
Traditional search engines rank by keyword and metadata matching; a vector database (Pinecone, Weaviate, Qdrant) ranks by semantic similarity of embeddings, which is what AI/RAG applications need. Some tools (Weaviate, Elasticsearch with vector support) blend both — if your use case is "find documents semantically similar to this query," look at our vector database category instead.
