A transactional email service delivers the automated emails your application sends — password resets, receipts, onboarding sequences, and notifications — with high deliverability and without managing your own mail server.
Resend, SendGrid, Postmark, and Mailgun all deliver transactional email, but they serve different teams. Resend is built for developers and has the cleanest API and React Email integration. Postmark obsesses over deliverability and inbox placement. SendGrid is the enterprise incumbent with every feature you could need. Mailgun offers the best price-per-email at volume. The scores below reflect deliverability, developer experience, pricing, and what happens when something goes wrong.
What are you looking for?
I am a developer building a web app
Resend scores highest on DX — a clean REST API, official SDKs for Node.js, Python, and Go, and first-class React Email support for building templates in JSX. Postmark is an excellent second choice if deliverability is your primary concern.

I need the best possible inbox placement
Postmark is the deliverability leader — they send transactional email only (no bulk), which protects sender reputation. Their average delivery time is under 10 seconds. Resend is a close second. Avoid services that mix transactional and bulk sending on the same infrastructure.

I send high volumes and price matters
Mailgun and SendGrid both offer volume pricing that Resend and Postmark cannot match at scale. SendGrid has a free tier of 100 emails/day permanently. Mailgun's Flex plan charges per email with no monthly fee.

Transactional email is triggered by a user action — a password reset, a purchase receipt, an email verification, a shipping notification. Marketing email is sent to a list in bulk — newsletters, promotions, announcements. Mixing them on the same service can hurt deliverability because spam complaints from marketing email affect the sender reputation used for critical transactional messages. Most teams use separate services for each.
Spam classification happens at the recipient's mail server, not your sending service. The main causes: missing SPF, DKIM, or DMARC records on your sending domain, a new sending domain with no reputation history, sending to invalid or inactive addresses, subject lines that trigger spam filters, or the recipient's mail provider is aggressive (Microsoft 365 is notoriously strict). Fix your DNS records first — they are responsible for most deliverability issues.
React Email is an open-source library (built by the Resend team) that lets you write email templates as React components rather than raw HTML tables. Emails are notoriously hard to style because email clients have inconsistent CSS support. React Email generates the ugly table-based HTML for you, while you write clean component code. Resend has first-class support; other services accept the HTML output.
SPF, DKIM, and DMARC are DNS records that prove your sending service is authorised to send email on behalf of your domain. Your email service provides the exact DNS records to add — it is usually 2–3 TXT or CNAME records added at your domain registrar or DNS provider. Without them, email often lands in spam or gets rejected. All four major providers have clear setup guides that take about 10 minutes.
Yes — SendGrid and Mailgun both offer dedicated IP pools that separate transactional and marketing traffic, protecting your transactional reputation from marketing bounce and complaint rates. Resend and Postmark are transactional-only by design. If you want one provider for everything, SendGrid is the most flexible option.
How these scores are calculated
Transactional email scores are based on published deliverability benchmarks from Email Tool Tester and Mailtrap, official pricing pages, API documentation quality, SDK availability and freshness, free tier limits, and developer community ratings from Indie Hackers and Hacker News as of 2026.
