Object storage holds your files, backups, and media as objects rather than in a filesystem hierarchy — accessed over an S3-compatible API instead of a server you manage yourself.
The object storage market split into two camps once Cloudflare R2 launched: providers that charge for egress (Amazon S3, the original and still the most widely supported) and providers that don't (R2, Backblaze B2). For content-heavy apps — image hosting, video, downloads — egress fees are frequently the largest line item on the bill, often dwarfing the storage cost itself. The scores below weight durability and price equally, then break out egress cost separately so you can see exactly where each provider makes its money.
What are you looking for?
I serve a lot of files to end users (images, downloads, media)
Egress cost is your real budget line, not storage. Cloudflare R2 and Backblaze B2 both eliminate or heavily discount egress — at meaningful traffic, either can cut your bill by 80%+ versus Amazon S3.

I am already deep in the AWS ecosystem
Amazon S3 has the broadest tooling, IAM integration, and third-party support of any object store. If your stack is already AWS-native, the operational simplicity of staying on S3 often outweighs the egress savings elsewhere.

I want to self-host and pay nothing for storage
MinIO is open-source, S3-API-compatible object storage you run yourself — on a VPS, in a container, or on-prem. Zero cloud storage fees, but you take on the durability and uptime responsibility that a managed provider would otherwise carry.

Object storage stores files as independent objects with metadata, accessed over an HTTP API (the S3 API has become the de facto standard), rather than as files in a folder hierarchy on a server you maintain. This makes it effectively infinitely scalable and durable without you managing disks, RAID, or backups — the tradeoff is you can't mount it as a regular filesystem without extra tooling.
Storage itself (cents per GB per month) is rarely the biggest cost. Egress — the fee charged every time data leaves the provider's network, e.g. when a user downloads an image — scales directly with traffic and can dwarf storage costs for content-heavy apps. Cloudflare R2 and Backblaze B2 built their entire pricing model around eliminating or discounting this fee specifically to compete with Amazon S3 on this point.
Yes, if you're already on AWS or need the broadest possible tooling and IAM integration — S3 remains the most universally supported object store, and most SDKs, backup tools, and CDNs assume S3 compatibility first. If egress cost is a major concern and you're not deeply tied to AWS, R2 or Backblaze B2 are worth serious evaluation before committing.
Mostly, yes — Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, Wasabi, DigitalOcean Spaces, and MinIO are all S3-API-compatible, meaning the same SDK calls work against any of them with just a different endpoint and credentials. The main migration cost is the one-time data transfer, not code changes.
Only if you have the operational capacity to manage durability, backups, and uptime yourself — MinIO eliminates cloud storage fees but transfers that responsibility to you. For most teams, a managed provider's SLA-backed durability is worth the modest cost; MinIO makes most sense for on-prem requirements or genuinely cost-sensitive, high-volume internal use.
How these scores are calculated
Object storage scores are based on published durability SLAs (e.g. 99.999999999% for S3-class providers), per-GB storage and egress pricing at common usage tiers, S3 API compatibility, and CDN/multi-region integration depth as of 2026.
